Philanthropy Ireland is delighted to announce that the Smurfit Kappa Foundation is partnering with us for Philanthropy Symposium ‘23 on the session entitled ‘Global Giving’. In a world where philanthropy has fewer borders and operates on both an international and national level, this session will look at adaptability of giving models. It will explore how foundations are incorporating local cultures, issues, and community leaders into achieving meaningful social impact and addressing challenges for effective cross border giving.
The Smurfit Kappa Foundation is an ideal partner for this session, with over 10 years of impactful global giving. By the end of 2022, they have funded over 200 projects in 24 countries, contributing over €12.4 million to initiatives that focus on supporting sustainable projects, that positively impact the lives of underprivileged people through health and nutrition, education and basic care and thus reducing inequalities that exist. The Smurfit Kappa Foundation uses the following six United Nations Sustainable Development Goals as a guide; SDG 1 No Poverty, SDG 2 Zero Hunger, SDG 3 Good Health and Wellbeing, SDG 4 Quality Education, SDG 5 Gender Equality, and SDG 10 Reduced Inequalities.
Below you will find a fantastic infographic that outlines their collective impact from 2012-2022, but here is a flavour of the impact the Smurfit Kappa Foundation is achieving on the ground.
Supporting Gender Equality
As part of the Smurfit Kappa Foundation’s commitment to SDG 5- Gender Equality they funded Stichting Beschermde Wieg, a life-saving initiative that creates a safe shelter for newborns who would otherwise be abandoned. The Foundation donated €30,000 towards the build of a new room which provides a safe future for 12 babies annually, as well as helping hundreds of vulnerable pregnant women find their way to prenatal care.
The Smurfit Kappa Foundation also provided a grant to Studying Mothers charity in the Netherlands. With this donation, childcare costs for children up to the age of 7 were covered for mothers trying to create a better life for themselves and their children by going back to college to get an education. In Colombia, the Smurfit Kappa Foundation is working with Esperanza Foundation to help improve the quality of life of women being released from prison and also support their families. The project provides training for these women with the goal of helping them find jobs and reintegrate into society upon release from prison.
