Philanthropy Ireland welcomes the publication of a draft National Philanthropy Policy. This is a vital step for the growth and development of philanthropy in Ireland for the benefit of our society. The framing of policy provides scope for collaborative development of models of philanthropy, promoting a culture of giving to positively impact on key social needs.
Philanthropy has played a critical role in developed and developing societies. It contributes to resolving issues and addressing needs strategically and with consideration. As an independent funding model, philanthropy can provide scope for innovating and testing models of intervention, embracing risk as a necessary element in achieving change.
A vibrant philanthropic sector working in partnership and collaboration with government will maximise benefits to Irish society. Philanthropy has played a significant role in turning the dial on many social issues and needs. Many challenges remain and many more will likely emerge.
There is real opportunity to grow philanthropy, by deepening understanding, building a supportive operating environment and by recognising the added value of philanthropic giving. I am very grateful to all who have supported this process to date. While there remains much to be achieved, policy framework provides a solid base from which to build. We look forward to continued engagement to collectively identify and advance key actions to ensure the policy delivers the impact intended.
