The Importance of Considering our Grant Making Strategies

The recent Grant Makers Network session on strategic grantmaking presented timely insights into how philanthropic organizations can sharpen their grantmaking approach to achieve meaningful, sustainable impact.  At its core, the session highlighted how a well-thought-out strategy can act as a "north star," guiding funding decisions through shifting priorities and helping maintain an organization’s core mission.

A central theme was the importance of a flexible framework that keeps long-term objectives in focus while allowing space for short-term adjustments as needs arise. By developing a strategic vision rooted in both the organization's unique identity and a solid understanding of external trends, funders can stay relevant and responsive to the communities they serve. The session underscored the value of investing in "insight architecture"—tools or practices to gather and interpret data from the field and internal progress.  The session explored models for funding—such as restricted versus unrestricted grants and open call versus invitation-only programs. An equally crucial component discussed is a shift from a monitoring mindset to a partnering approach, building trust and open dialogue with grantees. In closing, the session emphasized the importance of implementing Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning (MEL) systems to continually refine grantmaking strategies.  Continuous adaptation, grounded in mission and informed by learning, enables philanthropic organizations to remain effective and proactive in addressing community needs.

Full session notes, accessible below to our members, provide an in-depth guidance on creating a dynamic grantmaking approach that integrates insight, partnership, and adaptability.
