Building Impact: The Role of Philanthropy in Capital Development

7 October 2026

At OKC, we are committed to ‘connecting great people with great causes to achieve great impact. ’ This means we operate at a unique nexus point, working closely with charities while also engaging with philanthropists and corporate partners who make that impact a reality.

A lasting foundation

Philanthropy has long helped shape some of Ireland’s most enduring social, educational and cultural institutions. Programmes need the right physical environment to be delivered effectively, and a new building can often provide this. For philanthropists, the question is not simply what the building will provide, but what it will allow an organisation to do differently, and at what scale.

From vision to long-term impact

A strong capital proposition needs a credible plan for what happens once the doors open. Cancer Fund for Children’s new Daisy Lodge in Cong, Co. Mayo, due to open in 2027, will increase the number of children and parents it supports each year from approximately 1,800 to 4,000. Its funding model brings philanthropic support from Ireland and the US together with corporate and statutory investment, including support from the HSE and Shared Island Fund.

Stronger together

The strongest projects recognise that collaborative funding models work best. Government, philanthropy, corporate partners, local organisations and European investment can each play a role.

The capital development creates the conditions; what happens within the walls is what turns the investment into lasting social change.

Rooted in place

A connection to place can also be a powerful driver of philanthropy. Spraoi agus Spórt in Inishowen, rooted in its community for 16 years, is developing a campus that would create a permanent home for services currently spread across eight rented locations.

A partner for greater impact

At OKC, we work on both sides of this relationship — helping organisations build the case for ambitious projects, identify the right partners and develop philanthropic relationships that can support them. We work closely with all partners to understand where investment can contribute most meaningfully, ensuring long-term, strategic and sustainable impact that lives on long after the capital build concludes.
